Experiential Learning

At Schulich Law, not all your education happens in the classroom.

We believe that experiential learning is one of the most valuable parts of your degree, giving you a chance to sharpen your practical skills and learn about your interests, while also contributing to the community.

Internship program

Every summer, thanks to the generosity of loyal alumni, approximately 45 students benefit from a fully paid internship in a local, national, or international legal organization. Since 2009, Schulich Law’s Internship Program has placed 429 students, awarded $2.6 million in funds, and helped 178 organizations around the world.

These individualized placements will allow you to participate in causes you are directly connected to and interested in, while developing your unique perspective in the intersection of law and the communities you wish to help and passions you wish to pursue.

The Cowan Internship was the highlight of my law school career. It is because of my experiences at the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, through this internship, that I developed my passion for criminal law. This led me to enroll in Criminal Procedure in my third year of law school, as well as consider career opportunities in this area of the legal system.

Mooting

A moot, or mock trial, is an excellent way to gain the feel for being in a courtroom. At Schulich Law, not only will you experience mooting as part of the curriculum, but you will be able to practice your advocacy skills through a dozen moots that will take you across Canada and beyond.

As a second and third-year student, you’ll be able to participate in one or more of these mock trials, where you hone your ability to engage in persuasive legal writing, preparation of factums, proper courtroom decorum, and oral advocacy under the tutelage of expert coaches and professions in the field.

With over 20 exchange partners, students can spend their exchanges in different countries around the world.

· Africa (South Africa)

My exchange semester at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., was incredible! I had the chance to work with, as well as learn from, very accomplished lawyers and law students
from around the world. Highlights for me were making new friends from so many different places and having the opportunity to travel to new destinations. I would highly recommend it!

Pro Bono Dalhousie

Pro Bono Dalhousie was among the first Pro Bono student programs founded in Canadian law schools, providing legal research and related services without charge to organizations and individuals in need, principally in Nova Scotia.

You will have the opportunity to volunteer during the school year, providing legal information, conducting research, and assisting clients on projects involving issues such as immigration, disability rights, prison law, and the environment, to name a few.
